Check-ups & Cleanings Woodbridge
Why do I need to go for a dental check-up?
Good oral hygiene is important, not only for a healthy smile, but for your general health as well, and a great way to maintain good oral health is through regular check-ups.
The main reasons are:
- So that Dr. Mostyn can check for problems that you might not see or feel
- To allow your dentist to find early signs of decay (decay doesn’t become visible or cause pain until it reaches more advanced stages)
- To treat any other oral health problems found (generally, the earlier a problem is found; the more manageable it is)
A healthy mouth for a healthy body!
Poor oral health has been linked with the development of infection in other parts of the body. In one study, poor oral hygiene and periodontal disease was associated with the development of pneumonia in older people. Bacteria in the mouth can travel into the lungs, causing infection or worsening of lung conditions.
Other research has found an association between gum disease and rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation of the joints. Experts say the mechanism of destruction of connective tissues in both gum disease and RA is similar. At Woodstream Dental in Woodbridge, our experienced dentists recommends eating a balanced diet, coming in regularly for a professional cleaning, and good oral hygiene to help reduce your risks of tooth decay and gum disease. Make sure you brush twice a day and floss once a day. Using an antibacterial mouthwash or toothpaste can help reduce bacteria in the mouth that can cause gingivitis.
